BIOGRAPHY
Having been
born in the small town of Eads, Colorado in 1950 and living on a cattle
ranch with my parents, I viewed and learned of the West and the
out-of-doors first-hand. For four years, my father worked on several of
the larger cattle ranches in eastern Colorado, and I would ride along
with him on the cake wagon to feed cattle and check the fence lines.
Back in those days the ranches weren't all broken up. There were large
areas of land, and had to be to support the vast herds of cattle 5,000+
head. So, some of the ranches were 30-50,000 acres. Such were the JOD
and the Rush Creek Ranches.
In 1954, my family moved to northern Idaho, north of the small town of
Bonners Ferry. Our first winter was spent in a small one room log cabin
with a dirt floor and a hay loft, the loft being our sleeping area. My
father went to work in the logging industry, that was about the only way
to make a living in north Idaho. For ten years Idaho was our home. In
1964, logging looked more promising in Montana; so, the family packed-up
and moved to Libby, Montana, the northwest portion of the state.
It was here that I first tried my hand at art. My mother had dabbled a
bit in oils and produced some very successful paintings. Some she kept
and some she sold. Out of boredom, more than anything , I decided to
paint. Mother bought me some pastels thinking that would be a easier
starting point and I produced a couple pieces, which turned out quite
nice. By that time sports came along and I moved on to bigger and more
fun things.
In 1965, an art teach from Oregon came to Libby to teach. And in need of
a good grade so I could continue playing sports I started taking art
class, and for the next three years studied under Tom Sander, now an
internationally known wildlife artist. After high school, I went to
a Jr. college in Kalispell Mt. that had just opened and the art classes
were held in the old train depot. During this time I met an artist named
Ace Powell, western oil painter. I got to know him a bit and
would go over to his house to draw and watch him paint. I liked his work
and all the stories he would tell about the old day's when he would do
the same thing with Charley Russell, up in Glacier National Park.
In 1970 I decided I needed to get a job and make some money, so I joined
the Ironworkers Union and for the next 30 years I would paint as a
hobby. Now I'm retired and devote my time to painting. My
concentration has been in watercolors, oils, and acrylics. I do realism,
impressionist-real, and impressionism. My likes are wildlife, westerns,
landscapes, and still-life's.
The feeling that i would like to project to the viewer of my paintings
is one of having "been there before". To those who have not "been there",
a opportunity to fantasize and "go there". If people are born with
certain abilities, then my ability is to see what other people might
walk by and pass over. I try to capture it with a brush on paper and
canvas to create a mood and share a feeling. With this, I leave you to
enjoy the viewing.
First home in Idaho

I talked of
the first home our family lived in when we came out to Idaho in 1954.
This is a picture I took in 2004 of the very same home, I don't know how
many families have lived in it since then, but it is still standing. I
went inside and the dirt floor has been replaced with concrete, but the
loft is still there. It's on the right-hand side in this picture. Dalas
